tips to get your SketchUp model into CryEngine

May 1st, 2012

have your model “Un-selected” in SketchUp

avoid groups or components  within groups or components [only one level of grouping]

if your textures are not working try this option CryENGINE3_SketchUpToCE3 [leave the Playup tools file paths the same as before]

cryengine lights

May 1st, 2012

To add a light:

[1] go to the “Objects” RollupBar

[2] Select “Entity”

[3] Select “Lights”

[4] Click and drag “Light” into your level

To adjust the light:

Under the Entity Properties

Select Color

Diffuse: controls the lights colour

DiffuseMultiplier: controls the brightness (try 20)

Select options

CastShadows set to High or V.high [to adjust the Levels display you need to set the “Config Spec” in the Menu bar at the top of the window.

CryENGINE sandbox

April 23rd, 2012

Here are a few useful tips for making life easy in the CryENGINE sandbox3:

Note for sketchup:

  • Everything in the SU model should be organised into components/groups. Number of edges and faces in each component should be less than 6553
  • You can export over an existing model from SketchUp (i.e. export using the same ‘Definition Name’ as an existing model) but you will need to have Sandbox3 closed

“G” to toggle snapping to grid [on by default]

control “G” to start game mode “esc” to return to editor

“`” [found to the left "1" key] to access the console

once in console type:

g_showhud=0 to turn off HUD {heads up display]

hold down “control and Shift” when placing a model to give distance markers to nearest objects

Project 01 Requirements

March 23rd, 2012

Assessment:

You will be assessed at the end of the project on the body of work that you have produced. Your submission is to include:

  1. 21 hand drawn textures, 3 for each design principle
  2. 7 Refined textures (7 repeatable textures)
  3. 7 hand drawn 3D sketches
  4. 7 final images of the spatialised design principle (3D models), 1 image for each design principle This is the main element of the project

Process work posted on blog

For each item above you will be marked under the following Criteria:

  • Not Complete | Work has not been done
  • Poor | does not meet the standard of craft required. Textures do not clearly show each design principle. Repeated pattern has poor connections. Model lacks an 3D development.
  • Weak | Needs further development of craft and clarity of each principle. | No understanding of the design principle and under developed 3D model.  | Weak condensation of entourage.
  • OK | Begins to show an understanding of the design principle and a development from the 2D texture to the 3D model and considered use of entourage.
  • Good | Well crafted textures that clearly show each principle. | Demonstrates an understanding of the design principle and shows a development from the 2D texture to the 3D model. Envisioned use of entourage.
  • Great | Elegant, beautifully crafted hand drawn sketches clearly investigates each design principle. | Elegant, beautifully crafted textures that have resolved repetition. | Sophisticated, beautifully crafted image that shows a highly considered context.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Understand key digital design terms and concepts
Demonstrate competency and creativity in basic techniques of digital design Demonstrate a basic understanding of three-dimensional modeling software in order to visualise form and space

Assessment Criteria:

Your work will be assessed on the extent that it shows:
evidence of clear understanding and concept of each design principle
consideration of craft and communication in its representation of each design principle
(both 2 and 3-dimensionally)
evidence of all required work to be posted and clearly labeled on blogger weblog
