Application and development of research in an independent spatial design project. This paper explores a specific design research topic chosen by the student. Spatial design processes are applied to resolve the complexities of a design research project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation. Students development a design brief that formulates a critical position in relation to spatial design, establishing tangible links between theory and practice to identify design processes to generate design research response.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:

  1. Establish a critical position in relation to spatial design.
  2. Develop a design proposal and brief which engages their main ideas or processes.
  3. Apply research to design.
  4. Address and resolve the complexities of a design project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation.
  5. Present and communicate process and product articulately and in a manner which engages their main ideas or processes.

Assessment criteria

You will be assessed on the following areas:

  1. Depth of a considered; concept development, through prototyping exploration, and/or literation practices.
  2. Refinement and execution of your research, responding to limitations/complications, to an acceptable level of detail within a defined scope.
  3. Coherent presentation/communication/documentation of a well crafted and constructed project.
  4. Demonstration of independent creative integrity across the breadth of your project.
  5. A clear critical position of your own design research practice.

Development and realisation of an advanced spatial design project. This paper explores a specific design topic chosen by the student. Spatial design processes are applied to resolve the complexities of a design project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation. Students development a design brief that formulates a position in relation to spatial design, to identify design processes to generate a design response.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:

  1. Initiate and undertake a problem analysis for the development and refinement of a given brief.
  2. Identify and use appropriate research data.
  3. Independently develop and apply an innovative concept to the design process and design development.
  4. Progress and resolve the complexities of a design project to an in-depth level of detail and inhabitation.
  5. Visualise and present the process and resolution of a design project articulately and to a professional standard.

Assessment criteria

You will be assessed on the following areas:

  1. Depth of a considered; concept development, through prototyping exploration, and/or literation practices.
  2. Refinement and execution of your project, responding to limitations/complications, to an acceptable level of detail within a defined scope.
  3. Coherent presentation/communication/documentation of a well crafted and constructed project.
  4. Demonstration of independent creative integrity across the breadth of your project.
